Penn 950 SSM Spinfisher Metal Body - 9500 Saltwater Spinning Reel
The SSM was the 4th generation of SS spinning reels -- launched during the Penn ownership transition years in the early 2000's. It was at this time that a flood of reels from Asia was being sold in the USA - a lower cost 'new age' style and design that remains common today. In the 90's, Penn dominated the saltwater spinning reel market in the states. Some share went to Daiwa, Shimano, Mitchell and others, but nobody could touch Penn with the SS and Z black/ gold series of reels. That was before China was known as a manufacturing powerhouse or could even really sit at the same table as the USA in terms of economic production. But oh how things have changed.
The SSM is a hybrid of the classic SS design and the 'new age' design of spinning reels that use a one way roller bearing (clutch) as the AR function vs. the eared dog and ratchet used in the SS. Penn basically took an SS and said "How can we produce this reel a little cheaper but still call it a Penn SS?" The answer was to cut a few corners, ditch all the (expensive to manufacturer) internals under the rotor for a roller bearing and of course have it made in China.
Based on sales volume the redesign was a success. The SSM sold large numbers as boxed reels in addition to pre-mount slammer combos in all flavors. It was discontinued from the US market about 10 years ago.
The SSM has some SS characteristics ... if you're familiar with them you can see the similarities. One update was the use of 2 ball bearings inside the line roller instead of bushing. I think it's a nice reel - if you consider what is available today under $200 ... you have the current Penn models to compare, but really no other well-known manufacturer makes a saltwater reel that is similar to this.
All the various big names have their own following and style of spinning reel. Aside from them, a large chunk of total market share is consumed by 1000's of different iterations all of the the same thing - produced in China ... rebranded, rebadged and repackaged more times than anyone can keep track of. The SSM has the feel of a classic Penn, with some splashes of what is now today the industry standard. That's why I am calling it a hybrid - it's a mix of old and new.
